A Good Steward of Antibiotics
Doctor Patterson, aka “Dr. Pete,” is a third-generation physician who has been in practice for nearly 50 years. He began his career at Historic Mile 49 of the Alaska Highway in 1969.
After general practice, he trained in pathology and laboratory medicine, spending much of his career as a hospital pathologist, working behind the microscope and directing clinical laboratories.
He began working in post-acute facilities in 2012 as lab director of a mobile diagnostics company, serving nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Becoming Good Stewards of Antibiotics is a movement to restore and preserve antibiotic effectiveness.

Dr. Pete received his MD from the University of Alberta. In the past, he worked for a Fortune 500 health care manufacturing company, where he was trained in the principles and methods of Lean continuous quality improvement.
He brings the perspectives of a practicing physician-manager to his current work as an author and consultant to long-term care facilities and networks.
Best-Practice Award Winner
Over the years, Dr. Pete has acquired an extensive background in medical quality improvement, clinical microbiology, and infection prevention/antibiotic stewardship.
He has worked with many post-acute and long-term care facilities developing a results-oriented antibiotic stewardship protocol that has had a major positive impact on prescribing practices in skilled nursing facilities.
In 2016, the protocol won a best-practice award from the California chapter of AMDA: the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.
